Symposium topic:
Operation, Rehabilitation and Up-grading of Dams
(Problems with dams raised during operation – case histories.)
The aim of the Symposium is to gather together actual practical experience with dam operation through case histories, to uncover problems and defects, to upgrade the operational performance and surveillance, and experience with dam rehabilitation.
The themes chosen for the Symposium are:
- Experience in dam operation. Case histories.
- Problems in dam operation (floods, earthquake, foundation, seepage, internal erosion, ageing, deterioration of materials, etc.).
- The role of dams in water resources and hydropower management for sustanaible development.
- The role of dams in flood mitigation.
- Monitoring of dams.
- New trends and technologies in dam surveillance and monitoring.
- Safety analysis.
- Rehabilitation of dams.
- Up-grading of dams. New safety requirements (floods, earthquakes, development of science and technology, etc.).
- Adapting operating procedures of existing dams to meet new social, economic and environmental requirements.
Sending presentation materials and deadline:
- Authors may e-mail abstracts of not more than 300 words in English to the Secretary of the Organizing Committee up to 10 January 2008
- The authors of the approved material will be informed in a week after receiving the abstracts. Final papers must then be presented not later than 1 March 2008.
- Instructions on presenting the materials will be published on the Internet site of the event at www.icoldsofia2008.org and will be sent to each author whose abstract is approved.
- Delegates and participants will receive the Symposium Proceedings on the days of registration, 1-4 June 2008

Session details:
Every Symposium session will start with opening address and review report of the session general reporter generalizing presented reports. World tendencies of development in this direction will be presented in the review report. Then authors of selected reports will speek.
The selected reports could be presented in English and Bulgarian. Simultaneous translation will be provided.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING THE PAPERS FOR THE SYMPOSIUM
All papers must be presented in English and must be strictly on the topic of the Symposium.
Authors must submit electronic copy of the paper in A4 format and also a copy on paper. The electronic copy should be sent as an attachment to an E-mail message and the paper copy to the address of the secretary. The size of paper should not exceed 8Mb and the length of the paper should not exceed 12 pages, including abstract (300 words), introduction, text, conclusions, figures, tables and references.
Papers may be prepared using Microsoft Word 97, 2000 or XP.
The article must be original and unpublished elsewhere. The submission of the paper is taken to mean that the author(s) have all the necessary permissions.
The information, analyses and conclusions in the papers are on sole responsibility of the autors.
Times-Roman font is used throughout with a single line spacing with left, right, top and bottom margins 25 mm. The text should be 12-point, the title of the paper 14-point, and the authors' address footnotes 10 point.

All figures, photographs and tables should be inserted into the text. Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively. Captions of tables should be placed above and cantered. Captions of figures should be placed below and cantered. Lettering and annotations in tables and figures should be of the same size as text. Below and under figures and tables leave 1 line space. Formulas and equations should be numbered consecutively with numbers flush right in brackets (3).
Third level headings
(Flush left, no numbering, underlined, 12-point Times-Roman)
The International System of Units (IS) must be used.
All symbols should be defined when they appear for the first time.
References should be cited in the text as, e.g. Smith and Jones (1998). At the end of the paper the references should appear in alphabetic order.
