Before you consider Solar power you should take measure to reduce your usage now.
The cheapest and most effective energy upgrade is conservation
By cutting the fat out of your energy diet you reduce the size of the system often making it cheaper for an install
Look into Solar thermal or hot water systems as well

Solar power is the technology of obtaining usable energy from the light of the Sun. Solar energy has been used in many traditional technologies for centuries and has come into widespread use where other power supplies are absent, such as in remote locations and in space.
Solar energy is currently used in a number of applications:
* Heat (hot water, building heat, cooking)
* Electricity generation (photovoltaics, heat engines)
* Desalination of seawater.
Its application is spreading as the environmental costs and limited supply of other power sources such as fossil fuels are realized.

Basically, using photovoltaic (PV) panels based on silicon wafer technology solar radiation can be directly converted into electrical energy, but the process is not yet very efficient.
You can also capture the heat from the radiation and use it to produce steam to power a conventional power plant, or to heat a house.
Solar energy can be used for any process that requires electricity or heat.
Pro – renewable, free source of energy.
Con – not all areas get equal amounts of sun. It works best where the sun shines the most.

I wonder if these could be encased in resin so they last for 1000yrs, or would the resin yellow in the sun too much?
Solar panels are said to last 20 yrs, I suspect that may be designed failure rate which is why I had the idea of totally submerging them in resin which is incredibly durable & seals out all natural elements that may deteriorate the solder etc.
